Weather Policy
-
We operate in light rain and moderate wind, as these conditions provide valuable, real-world sailing experience. Our vessel features a spacious cabin for comfort when needed, ensuring learning continues in a safe setting. Guided by our experience in New York Harbor, we carefully balance challenge with comfort and never exceed safe, appropriate conditions.
-
In the event of heavy weather or conditions that prevent departure, programming continues dockside at Chelsea Piers. Through our marina partnerships, including Empire Yacht Charters, students engage in onboard instruction, vessel tours, and operational learning experiences, ensuring continuity in a safe and controlled environment. Parents will always be updated about changes in the schedule.
-
In the event of severe weather that makes dockside or onboard activity unsafe, sessions may be canceled. Parents will be notified the day prior or up to 90 minutes before arrival time. We rely on multiple forecasting sources and coordinate with experienced captains on the dock to make informed, safety-first decisions.
Captain Gino on Weather
Light Weather
Some of the most memorable days on the water come with a bit of precipitation. Light rain and steady breezes often bring reduced vessel traffic, favorable winds, and unique navigation challenges—such as interpreting lights and sound signals. In these conditions, students tend to become even more engaged as the environment adds a new dimension to learning. While some may see drizzle and wind as a reason to pause, we see it as an opportunity to experience the harbor in a dynamic and enriching setting.
Heavy Weather
In conditions where remaining aboard Nynette Marie becomes uncomfortable, students transition to curated site visits within Chelsea Piers. Through partnerships with Empire Yacht Charters and other local operators, students explore larger vessels, tour wheelhouses and engine rooms, and gain insight into real-world vessel operations. Guest speakers often join to share their experience, creating an engaging and memorable extension of learning beyond the water.
