Meet Gino Santana, founder of New Light Sailing. A native New Yorker, Gino has dedicated his career to the maritime industry and is now a licensed captain with over 12 years of experience navigating the waters of New York Harbor. He began his maritime studies at the New York Harbor School, focusing on vessel operations, which led to opportunities across the industry—including volunteer work, internships, educational programs, and professional roles that expanded his mariner experience. Between seasons, he earned a Bachelor’s degree majoring in Homeland Security, Cybersecurity, and Emergency Preparedness.
Today, Captain Gino serves as a Charter Boat Captain for private companies along Chelsea Piers in New York City, overseeing vessel operations and ensuring the safety of all passengers. In the off-season, he further hones his skills through offshore vessel deliveries. He also mentors new captains and crew members, consistently balancing operational excellence, passenger satisfaction, and strict safety standards.
Gino founded New Light Sailing with the belief that the most meaningful learning happens through hands-on, experiential adventures—lessons that can’t be found in classrooms or on land—and is committed to creating a safe, engaging environment where students develop practical skills, confidence, and a lasting connection to the water.
